Hi, I'm Mary Hewitt!

I always knew it had to be Early Childhood. I belonged at the beginning, the roots, the foundation, upstream.

So, I set out to become an educator. I moved into the classroom, bringing my academic training and applying it to the field. It turns out, the academic background I had established was a fundamental launching point, but the children and families would continue to move me forward. They were the reason I eventually moved into a system-wide leadership role for the early years, advocating as a regional leader on a broader scale. But I often wondered: Are policies enough—and is this where my impact lives? Can these initiatives and programs make a dent without ongoing, high-quality pedagogical leadership? I knew I needed to be closer to the educators and families—while also having the capacity to make widespread change.

At my core I am a communicator of research, a facilitator of learning, and a passionate advocate for children, educators, and families. The role that encompasses all these moving parts is: pedagogical leadership. As a pedagogical leader and ECE professor, I am most at home. For me, this is where my unique contribution is optimized for the sector.

Together with educators, families, and early years leaders—I put one foot in front of the other to ensure children can thrive.
